Jurgen Klinsmann

... wasn't just the second German Footballer of the Year; he was only the second from outside the British Isles (after Bert Trautmann in 1956).

After Klinsmann in 1995, the next British winner was Teddy Sheringham in 2001. Since 1994 (up to and including 2016) there have only been seven British winners – six English and one Welsh. Roy Keane (2000) was the second winner from the Republic of Ireland, after Johnny Carey (1949) who was the second winner.
